Discover the 200 year history of the Melrose Plantation. A National Historic Landmark, Melrose Plantation contains nine historic buildings including the African House, Yucca House, Weaving Cabin, Book Bindery, Clementine Hunter Cabin and Big House. This unique site was founded by Louis Métoyer, the son of an African slave, Marie Thérèse Coincoin, and reflects the birth of a culture know today as the Cane River Creole. In addition, Melrose Plantation is the home of the world famous African American folk artist Clementine Hunter. A collection of her work is available for viewing including her world famous African House Murals
