Winslow Homer (1836-1910) spent his final decades living and working in this rustic structure, perched on Maine’s rocky coast, where he created powerful images of crashing surf and humankind’s struggles against the elements—paintings that are widely considered among the greatest masterpieces of American art. Recently renovated and opened for tours in 2012, the Homer Studio offers visitors an intimate glimpse of Homer’s life and a moving experience of the place that inspired his art. This National Historic Landmark is owned and operated by the Portland Museum of Art.
