Lake Geneva, located in southeastern Wisconsin and easily accessible from Milwaukee, is one of the Midwest's most beautiful natural wonders. It has long been a vacation destination especially for Chicagoans, who originally sought refuge in the area while their homes and businesses were being rebuilt after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.  It is commonly referred to as the "Newport of the West" for its pristine natural beauty and beautiful lakefront estates.

Mansions, Estates & Architecture

Highlighting the historic atmosphere of Lake Geneva are the well-preserved mix of homes that display a historical spectrum of American residential architecture, from a Gothic Revival cottage and large picturesque Queen Ann style mansions, to formal colonial Revival style houses and progressive Craftsman style homes.  A favorite pastime for visitors is meandering along the perimeter of the 21-mile Geneva Lake Shore Path, offering pedestrians intimate views of the area's most famous mansions and restored estates.

Outdoor Activities

Recreational activities abound in Lake Geneva.  Beach bums can relax on the shores of the lake while other outdoor enthusiasts enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, water skiing, biking, horseback riding or one of the 20 challenging golf courses in the area.   The town's architecture can be admired while taking a tour on the Geneva Lake Cruise Line or by participating in the oldest continuous mail-boat service in the United States.  Lake Geneva plays host to annual town parades, fairs and festivals and is home to the world's largest refracting telescope at Yerkes Observatory.

Unlike some resort towns that focus on just seasonal activities, Lake Geneva offers a variety of entertainment throughout the year. The historic downtown area boasts an array of shops where rare antiques and delicious Wisconsin-made confections can be found.  Lake Geneva also has accommodations for any budget, from upscale resorts such as the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa to small bed and breakfast inns.

Lake Geneva, WI, is one of those places that just makes you feel good. Great Midwestern values are evident around every corner. The atmosphere is sincere and down to earth. They have a great downtown area with nice shops and some good places to eat. Skip the chains and check out some of the locals' favorites such as "Popeyes" (not chicken) which has great views of the lake and cooks rotisserie chicken fresh just outside their door. Smells incredible! Another favorite for locals is Chicago Pizza which actually took 1st place in a pizza contest in Italy in 2009! Another great place is Scuttlebutts for great breakfast, lunch and dinner. Take your time and wander through town, browsing the boutiques. Don't forget to take a boat tour over at Gage Marine at the Riviera and enjoy the big attraction, the beautiful lake itself! If you have time head over to the lakeshore and walk the path. It's beautiful to see the lake and the homes up-close, not to mention a great work-out. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water & a camera. You really can't go wrong on your visit, just breath in the simple beauty and enjoy! Leave your stress at home.

Being a teenage and living in Lake Geneva, of course it has its pulses and minuses. Most teenages think there is nothing to do here, and consiter it a "crappy little town." but once you mature and grow you relize, you find out so much about yourself and everything around you in the town. You learn about family, friends, and love. Honestly, I do think it is a great place, and I will cry when I leave it. But one think I'll always love Lake Geneva, and I'll always remeber what I was taught here.

As someone who was born and raised in Lake Geneva, left for university and career, and then had the good fortune to return, I can only say: I love Lake Geneva! It has its pluses and minuses, just like every city. Having quick access to Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago (just 45 to 90 minutes away by car) without having to put up with all the big city hassles is a definite plus. The lake is beautiful. There is an easy pace to things. Some great restaurants. Life is good here. While we do have the Midwest winters (not my favorite season, sorry), to paraphrase W. C. Fields, "All things considered, I'd rather be in Lake Geneva." Come see what it's all about. You'll find yourself coming back for more.

I have been going to Lake Geneva for years- but last year we happened upon a new theatre company and saw a Noel Coward play. It was fantastic! The were a real professional company -better than a lot of plays I have seen in Milwaukee. Look for them when you are there. Their name is The Lake Geneva Theatre Company.

If you enjoy history...drive a few miles north of Lake Geneva into Springfield and visit the 100 year old train depot. Only open in the summer.

I absolutely LOVE Lake Geneva and all it has to offer year round. The City has changed throughout the years, but only for the better. Preserving it's historical qualities, many rennovations take place to improve the area. One place that stands out is the Lake Geneva Courtyard featuring the soon to be opened Bistro 220. It's the talk of the town and we can't wait to patronize this exciting new establishment at 220 Cook Street.

My grandparents had a cottage on the lake and we spent summers there. By all means do the hike around the lake on the path that is open to walkers for the entire distance. In September there is a great triathlon. We drove our car on the ice in winter -- definitely not recommended, but try the ice fishing on foot.

Don't miss staying at the Lazy Cloud Bed and Breakfast. It's a romantic getaway that surpasses 'em all! Lots of free amenities are included in the price. My wife and I have been there twice and are going again soon. Great place to stay while in Lake Geneva.
