Pewabic Pottery

An important pioneer in Detroit's artistic and cultural life, Mary Chase Perry Stratton (1867-1961) founded Pewabic Pottery in 1903, at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement. Under her direction, Pewabic Pottery produced nationally-renowned vessels, tiles, and architectural ornamentation featuring unique iridescent glazes. In 1947, Stratton received the coveted Charles Fergus Binnis Medal, the nation's highest award in the field of ceramics. Today, Pewabic Pottery is still an operating facility that contains the studio, showroom, and fabrication space where Stratton created most of her life's work.
