Updates
These two battlefields, connected by a paved road, were renamed by the U.S. Congress in 1991 as the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. The site sits on the Crow Indian Reservation. The private owner of a tract of land adjacent to the Reno-Benteen Battlefield continues to threaten the Monument with development pressures. The property owner has altered the landscape through various additions including a perimeter fence, and concession stand, and tipi built for employees. He has also expressed an interest in building a museum/trading post on the land or, alternatively, selling the land to the highest bidder. Outside encroachment by residential and commercial development further endanger the historic view shed and cultural landscape of the Monument and adjacent Little Bighorn Valley.
