Visitors to Sheridan, Wyoming will be as awestruck by the views of the Big Horn Mountains as they are by the wide array of things to do and see in this Western frontier town. Rugged outdoor-types can get their fresh air fix in the surrounding wilderness and natural areas: hiking, golfing, skiing, hang-gliding—it all can be found around Sheridan.
If adrenaline is not your thing, you’ll find much to explore at nearby historic and cultural sites. The region is rich in Native American history, including the Battle of Little Bighorn site and Fort Phil Kearny, a focal point in the Indian-settler fighting along the bloody Bozeman Trail.
Sheridan’s lovingly restored historic downtown offers a wealth of treasures as well, including shops that specialize in Western art, antiques, log furniture, jewelry and more. King’s Saddlery & Ropes is a must-see attraction, a world-class Western tack store for outfitting true cowboys (and girls) and cowboys-at-heart. Rock stars, rodeo stars and cowpokes alike should find their way to the Mint Bar, a timber-walled watering hole that serves whisky and beer—and a return to life on the ranch, circa 1941. Those with a fondness for Buffalo Bill will especially enjoy the Sheridan Inn, a National Historic Landmark, where the performer lived and auditioned acts for his Western show. Relishing in Sheridan’s frontier culture should not be confused with hardship though. The town’s easy walking paths link many of the city’s parks and points of interest, while a fleet of replica trolleys provide guided tours of downtown attractions. Sheridan’s numerous interesting restaurants, entertainment venues and abundant public art installations will have you believing this town is truly “The West at its Best!
