Significance
Last updated in 2003, the East End Historic District in Newburgh, New York was once a showcase of American history, culture and design. Today, a severely depressed economy has resulted in high vacancy rates, widespread abandonment and severs deterioration of the landmark district. Like many other small cities, Newburgh has not been immune to economic restructuring and has suffered from the loss of jobs and wealth.
Updates
Neglect, vacancy, and abandonment continue to be problems in areas of Newburgh's East End Historic District, though local organizations and advocates and visionary developers have revitalized many blocks and beloved historic buildings in the district, such as the Armory, currently used as County offices. In 2008, Newburgh hired a Historic Preservation Officer to more fully address the needs of property owners in the historic district, and to guide preservation efforts.
