Florence Griswold Museum

Designed in 1817 by the Hartford architect Samuel Belcher, this Late Georgian-style mansion was acquired by the Griswold family in 1841 and eventually turned into a boarding house for artists by Florence Griswold. Between 1899 and the 1920s, the Florence Griswold House was the communal heart of the Lyme Art Colony. Its landscapes attracted Impressionist painters such as Childe Hassam, Willard Metcalf and William Henry Howe. Now home to the Florence Griswold Museum, it includes an impressive collection of American paintings, as well as the archives and artifacts of the Lyme Historical Society. The setting offers a moving experience to stand where the artists lived and worked, observe their paintings, and admire the very same scenery that inspired them nearly a century ago.
