Dozen Distinctive Destinations

Alexandria, Virginia

Year Listed: 2011

Situated across the Potomac River from the nation’s capital, Alexandria, Virginia is one of the most culturally rich destinations in the country. The city has taken such care in saving its cherished past that you can still dine at the same tavern where Thomas Jefferson celebrated his presidential inauguration. With cobbled streets, an abundance of 18th and 19th century architecture, chic boutiques, and fine art and antique galleries, Alexandria is fun to explore. In the famous Old Town, the third oldest locally designated historic district in the country, visitors can even hop on a free trolley to discover historic sites.

George Washington Slept Here

Home to founding father George Washington, the city boasts an extraordinary early American past. The George Washington Birthday Celebration on the weekend of Presidents’ Day remembers Alexandria’s favorite son with a birthnight ball, a 10K race, historic site open houses and the country’s largest parade celebrating George Washington. Mount Vernon, Washington’s beloved estate, also holds special events. Civil War buffs will discover historic sites scattered across the city, which was the longest occupied territory of the war.

Outdoor Fun

Alexandria is not just for the history buffs. Recently recognized by Prevention magazine and the American Podiatric Medical Association as one of the top 100 Walking Cities in America and the Best Walking City in Virginia, the city offers trails along the gorgeous Potomac River, through quaint neighborhoods and nature preserves. You’ll find miles of bikeways and bike racks, as well as biking and walking tours.
