Fort Frederica
Year Listed: 1989, 1990, 1991
Location: St. Simons Island , Georgia
Current Status: Endangered
Threat: Development
Significance
A relic of the 18th century Spanish and British rivalry for control of the southeastern U.S. coast, Fort Frederica was listed because of encroaching condominium and marina development.
Updates
The fortified settlement and its associated features – tabby ruins, fort, barracks, walls, moat, and housing – continue to be well maintained and are in stable condition. The fort and its resources are also intact, with its marsh front setting providing a visual buffer from the new development proposed to occur along the park's boundaries. In 2007 a local land trust and the county commission purchased 20.8 acres of property adjoining Fort Frederica's northern boundary, preventing construction of a condominium complex on this tract. Since that date, NPS has expressed interest in expanding Fort Frederica's boundaries. But before boundary expansion may occur, a survey exploring the issue is initiated. At the present time NPS is seeking monies to fund survey expense.
