Significance
Fort Frederica National Monument encompasses 250 acres of coastal lowland on the western shore of St. Simons Island, Georgia. This National Monument preserves the remains of a fortified colonial town, ruins of the King's Magazine and Barracks, and the site of the battle of Bloody Marsh – a battlefield site located six miles south of Fort Frederica's headquarters. A relic of the 18th century Spanish and British rivalry for control of the southeastern U.S. coast, Fort Frederica faces encroaching condominium and marina development.
