11 Most Endangered Historic Places
Franklin Post Office
Year Listed: 1991
Location: Franklin, Tennessee
Significance
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places and located at Franklin's most important intersection, the handsome brick post office has played an integral part in the daily lives of local residents since 1926. While revitalizing the historic heart of Franklin, the post office was recognized by the townspeople as a community focal point contributing to its economic and social fabric. But, like post offices across small-town America, Franklin's downtown postal facility was scheduled to be moved away from its accessible main street to a highway on the edge of town, leaving the historic post office building vacant.
