Historically black churches represent the individual and collective memory of the African-American community and have served as the repository of the culture and the history of Black America for decades. But beginning in the 1990's many of these important community structures have been destroyed in acts of arson. The future of these important landmarks of American-American culture are in danger of disappearing.

Updates
The Southern and Southwestern regional offices of the National Trust continue to provide seed money for a number of Black congregations. A continuing threat to these congregations is a decreasing number of worshippers. Additionally, many of these congregations are opting to abandon older structures and build new.
