Updates
Following the listing of Manassas Battlefield as one of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America, Congress appropriated funds to purchase the threatened site, but other lands nearby are still threatened. Although attempts in the 1980s and 1990s to develop near the battlefield were successfully defeated, the battlefield is rapidly becoming surrounded by sprawl. Severe traffic congestion along U.S. Route 29 makes the National Military Park almost inaccessible during rush hour, and many preservationists fear an impending push to widen the highway to four lanes through the heart of the battlefield. A proposed bypass around the park may ease the traffic, but possibly at the expense of increasing development pressure on the park.
