Honoring Women: Oatlands

This estate was donated to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in memory of William and Edith Eustis, the last private owners of Oatlands, by their daughters, Mrs. Eustis Emmet and Mrs. David E. Finley.

Once part of the extensive Carter family plantation holdings, Oatlands is located between Washington and Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Elegant formal gardens were created by generations of the two families who lived here. After the Civil War, the plantation became unprofitable. A prominent Washington family purchased, preserved and maintained the house and grounds as a country estate. Oatlands tells the stories of a 19th-century working plantation, a turn-of-the-century English-style country house and the families who made their home there.

Oatlands is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and operated by Oatlands, Inc.
