Canetuck Community Center
Canetuck School
Currie, North Carolina
The Canetuck School was built in 1921. It is the only community building for miles around but currently used sparingly due to the energy inefficiency of the building which makes regular use cost prohibitive.
Thanks to the Lowe's grant, the building will undergo a broad revitalization to improve energy efficiency. This will include new insulation, repaired or replaced windows, roof repairs, and the use of energy saving materials whenever possible. Finally, the building will be painted and the floors and porches will be repaired.
Once complete, the building will be able to be used to its fullest potential and help to revitalize the community. It will continue to serve as a meeting place, polling center, and site for social gatherings, and will also be available for adult and continuing education classes.
The Canetuck Community Center will manage the project. To learn more, contact Tracy Hayes in the Southern Regional Office.
This Rosenwald School received a restoration grant in 2010 from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
