Vicksburg Campaign Trail
Year Listed: 1997
Location: Vicksburg, Mississippi
Significance
The fields, bayous and country roads where the Vicksburg Campaign was fought – and the tide of the Civil War turned – is threatened by the forces of time, change and neglect. The 200-mile path of this turning-point campaign may soon be lost completely – the battlefield at Jackson is already gone and developers have proposed the same for the pristine Big Black River battlefield. Key buildings of the Vicksburg Campaign such as the Shaifer House and the Coker House were crumbling unnoticed by the public.
