E.I. Couse Historic Home and Studio
This property of Eanger Irving Couse (1866-1936) dates back to 1836 and represents over 100 years of architectural and social history, ranging from Colonial Spanish to Pueblo Revival. When the Couses purchased the home in 1909, it was adapted to include an artist's studio and a terraced garden. Remarkably, the architecture of the Couse House remains as it was during the artist's lifetime and still contains his furnishings, collections, archives, and several of the Native American paintings for which he became famous. The property also includes two studios of Joseph Henry Sharp, Couse's neighbor and colleague in the Taos Society of Artists. In this context, visitors may acquire a sense of the artists' lives in these remote and simple surroundings, and the regional elements that impacted their work.
