The oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, Astoria (pop. 9,800) enjoys a picture-perfect setting beside the Columbia River. Two centuries ago, Lewis and Clark ended their famed expedition near Astoria; more recently the city has served as the backdrop for popular movies such as The Goonies and Free Willy. Opportunities for outdoor recreation include fishing, boating, hiking and exploring the nearby Pacific beaches. The city's maritime heritage is reflected in the Columbia River Maritime Museum as well as in a host of fresh seafood markets and restaurants. Downtown's Hotel Elliott is one of the National Trust's Historic Hotels of America, while the nearby Liberty Theater has been featured on HGTV's "Restore America" series. Other historic sites include the Flavel House Museum; the towering Astoria Column with its breathtaking views and murals depicting Oregon's early history; and the reconstructed Fort Clatsop, where living history demonstrations depict Lewis and Clark's 1805-06 winter encampment. Children will delight in the Uppertown Firefighters and Children's Museum, while the whole family will enjoy the parades, performances and food that enliven the annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival - all capped off with a relaxing ride on the restored 1914 Riverfront Trolley. "With a rich history that embraces America's best-known pathfinders and modern-day icons of pop culture, Astoria offers visitors a great experience," said National Trust President Richard Moe. "Its commitment to protecting and showcasing its heritage makes it a great illustration of how preservation and economic development go hand-in-hand."
