Portland's Asian American communities are much smaller and more intimate than California?s. Chinatown is on 4th Ave. and Burnside St. In the 1890s, Portland had the second largest Chinese community in the U.S. The Chinatown Gate is the official entrance. Many Chinese shops and restaurants are located here. Fong Chong and Louie's are among the oldest serving traditional Cantonese meals. There is a Japanese American Historical Plaza that includes haiku poems describing the Japanese American war experience. One building to see is the Yeon Building, 522 SW 5th Avenue.
