Dozen Distinctive Destinations
Eureka, California
Year Listed: 2011
Tucked away in rural Northern California, Eureka is a beautifully preserved Victorian-era getaway. In fact, the Old Town is one of the nation’s best original Victoria-era commercial districts and features the “Jewel of Eureka” – the Carson Mansion. With towers and turrets, columned porches, multiple gables and ornate gingerbread detail – not to mention the paint job – it epitomizes the Victorian dream home and is considered one of the most photographed Victorian homes in America.
The Old Town district is right on the bay, where visitors can take in the sights and sounds of the passing boats and wildlife. You can take a cruise or rent kayaks and paddle out to the islands for bird watching, or follow the water trails of the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
