Sam Maloof Historic Residence and Woodworking Studio
Acknowledged as one of the finest woodworkers and master craftsmen of our time, Sam Maloof (1916-present) has designed and produced furniture infused with a profound artistic vision for more than half a century. One of nine children of Lebanese parents, who immigrated to the United States, Maloof was born and raised in Chino, California. The home he built and shared with his wife Freda Ward Maloof (1911-1998) in Rancho Cucamonga is the only home dedicated to a living artist in the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios program. Maloof began hand-crafting the residence he shared with his family in 1954, using whatever materials available to him at that time. Over the years, he created a home of unique beauty and artistry that is a setting for his furniture and for the extensive art collections he gathered with his wife. These include American Indian Art and one of the finest collections of post-World War II arts and crafts in America. In 1985, he received the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Award, the first craftsmen to be so honored. Maloof’s work is in such permanent collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the White House Craft Collection.
Public tours Thursday and Saturday, reservations strongly recommended. Children must be 14 or older to participate.
