Helping people protect, enhance
and enjoy the places that matter to them

The Munras Murals Campaign

Ensuring the survival, conservation, and integrity of California’s missions requires expertise, funding and patience. Repairs that might ordinarily take weeks in a modern building require months in these venerable adobe structures, and cost factors are generally higher than in other historic preservation projects.

Since 2003, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey and the Franciscan Fathers of California have been diligently working with local and national partners to raise the $6 million necessary to repair and preserve the church at Mission San Miguel Arcángel. The Western Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the California Missions Foundation, and the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation have joined to assist Mission San Miguel in raising the $1.8 million necessary to conserve and restore the Munras Murals in the nave of the mission church.

In 2007, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation awarded a challenge grant of $250,000 toward the conservation project and the National Trust for Historic Preservation and California Missions Foundation have pledged to raise additional funds to complete this vitally important piece of the overall Mission San Miguel preservation project.

When Mission San Miguel is made structurally sound, it will reopen its doors to the general public. Once again, visitors will be able to tour the original mission-era buildings, experience first-hand the vivid original Native American decorations and painting, walk the grounds, and visit the historical museum.
