The Dozen Distinctive Destinations program recognizes unique cities and towns that are working to preserve their historic character, promote heritage tourism, enhance their community and encourage others to enjoy all they have to offer. Each year since 2000, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has selected 12 destinations across America that offer an authentic visitor experience by combining dynamic downtowns, diverse cultural activities, attractive architecture and a strong commitment to historic preservation, sustainability and revitalization.

Throughout its history, Key West, Florida, a 2005 Distinctive Destination, has been a place of great cultural diversity and acceptance, reflected in the City’s slogan “One Human Family.” This diversity is has given the City an unrivaled charm. There is something for everyone to do and see here. From historic sailing vessels to World War II ships and subs; historic house museums to fine art and treasure museums; walking tours through the historic district to tours through the historic cemetery; and of course tours through Old Town on the famous Conch Train. On the beaches are the recently discovered African Cemetery, marked as a Florida Heritage Site, and the historic forts East and West Martello and Fort Zachary Taylor - popular sites for visitors and locals alike. The City of Key West avidly supports historic preservation and the promotion of heritage tourism and economic vitality. Columbus, Indiana, a 2005 Distinctive Destination is a real treat for visitors...literally. In June of this year, Columbus held the grand reopening of Zaharako’s Ice Cream Parlor, a fully restored local favorite with breathtaking interior details and homemade delicious ice cream. Since its designation, Columbus has continued on a path of distinction, with a progressive downtown revitalization program and the commission of two new modern buildings — a visitors center and middle school.
