2010 Dozen Distinctive Destinations Nomination Questions

 

After you have read through the Nomination Guidelines carefully, you will be able to move onto the Nomination Form. Below you will find a list of the questions you will be asked to answer. We recommend preparing your responses to these questions in a Word Document, for example, before continuing on to the Nomination Form. This way, you will be completely ready to copy and paste your responses into the form.

1. Describe in 250 words or less the ways in which this destination is distinctive, focusing on the authentic visitor experience it offers, the dynamic downtown, the diverse history and community, your commitment to preservation, revitalization, and sustainability, and the heritage tourism infrastructure.

2. In 2-3 sentences, tell us what your destination is best known for and what hidden gems or surprises a visitor wouldn't want to miss.

3. How does your community work to preserve its historic resources? Describe your destination's commitment to historic preservation and community revitalization. What have you done, why is it important to the community and visitors? Give examples.

4. Describe any efforts your community has made to be sustainable and "green". Discuss the "walkability" of your destination, mass transportation, local food products or restaurants, walking and biking tours, etc.

5. Is your destination or any local landmarks part of a preservation partnerships? (e.g. National Trust for Historic Preservation – Main Street, Historic Hotels of America, Historic Sites, Statewide & Local Partner, Save America's Treasures; Preserve America; National Register; etc.)

6. Describe any unique lodging, dining, and shopping opportunities in your community that would appeal to heritage travelers? You are welcome to list some favorites. We're looking for destinations that appeal to people of all ages with a wide range of interests. Tell us why your community's historic places, events, outdoor activities, cultural history, and attractions would appeal to a diverse audience.

7. The strength of the Distinctive Destinations program relies on cross-promotion efforts between the National Trust for Historic Preservation and YOU! What local resources will you use to leverage your designation should your community be selected? If your destination is selected, how will this designation be promoted? Be as specific as possible. 8. The national announcement on February 3, 2010 will be followed by one month of nationwide voting on a "fan favorite" from among the 12 selected sites. The winner of the popular vote will be announced in early March. How will you encourage the public to vote for your destination if you are selected as one of the 12?
