Sail from Athens via the scenic Corinth Canal to Cephalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, to visit Argostoli, once a strategic port in the Byzantine Empire. Continue to Sicily, perhaps the most magnificent island in the Mediterranean, and its volcanic Aeolian Islands. In Lipari, visit a 16th-century Norman castle and in Pompeii and Herculaneum, see the remains of the towns preserved by the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius. Also tour Paestum, one of Italy’s most important archaeological sites; medieval Monreale, where the Norman kings of Sicily built an incredible cathedral; and Selinunte. Conclude in Syracuse and walk across the bridge to the Old Town on Ortygia Island to find ancient Greek and medieval monuments.
