Enchanting Douro River Aboard AmaVida
September 26–October 6, 2015
Spend two days in 2,000-year-old Oporto, taking in the fine Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings of the Old City as well as the 21st-century Rem Koolhaas masterpiece Casa da Música. Stop in Bitetos to visit a manor house and sample its young "green" wine. In Caldas de Aregos, known for its hot springs, explore the 14th-century Alpendurada Monastery overlooking the valley, then step ashore in Régua for an excursion to the fantastically Baroque manor house of Mateus (famous from its depiction on the Mateus Rosé label) and its equally fantastic gardens. From Pinhao, travel to Lamego to admire the hilltop pilgrimage church Nossa Senhora dos Remedios, with its 600 tiled steps. Spend time exploring picturesque Barca d'Alva before sailing across the Spanish border to disembark in Vega de Terron. Optional Madrid postlude.
