A “Grand Tour” for a new generation, travel through the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland, cruising the fabled Rhine River and riding aboard three legendary railways. Admire the verdant Swiss countryside; stroll among Lucerne’s half-timbered houses and along covered bridges; take in panoramic Alpine vistas from Mount Pilatus; and marvel at the iconic Matterhorn. En route, visit four UNESCO World Heritage Sites and pass Gothic cathedrals, medieval castles, terraced vineyards, and rustic villages. Sip a refreshing glass of Riesling in Strasbourg, discover the medieval university town of Heidelberg, and stand before the twin spires of Cologne Cathedral. A post-tour extension to Amsterdam is also planned.
Study Leader Information
John Meffert, consultant on Heritage Conservation Services, has a long tradition with the National Trust. He has served as the Director for the National Trust’s Southern Office from 1982-1988 and was the director of the Preservation Society of Charleston, the oldest non-profit organization in the United States, responsible for preserving the historic resources of Charleston, SC. John has delighted many study tour groups with his lectures and insights on preservation, and continues to receive rave reviews as study leader.
